Across the Board

What does it mean?

Across the board is a term that describes a movement in the market in which all, or nearly all, stocks move in the same direction. This kind of large-scale increase or decrease in value is often due to market-wide events. The term can also refer to similar shifts on a smaller scale, such as mass movement in a single company’s stock or in a single segment of a national economy.

Background on Across the Board

The term is originally derived from the New York Stock Exchange Big Board as, when the NYSE began, there was a large board on which stock prices were listed. The movement of stocks, either up or down, could then be seen on the board itself. This term is also often applied outside of the financial world.

Across the Board in use

The term across the board is often used in the media to refer to both the international market and an individual company’s performance.

One example is the Washington Post headline: “US stocks post across-the-board losses to close bruising week.” The article went on to state: “Markets roiled Friday as stocks dropped across the board on the latest volley in the US trade dispute with China.” This article is describing the decreased valuation of stocks across the entire market.

The term is also used for international markets. One Irish Times headline reads: “Markets stronger across the board at end of volatile week.” The article goes on to list the various Irish banks and institutions that saw a profitable week.

However, the term is most often used to describe the NYSE, such as in the 1988 article “Shocked Investors Dump Stocks Across the Board” from the Washington Post, which describes a descent in the Dow Jones and the resulting loss of confidence.
