Thousands of Victorian commuters will be able to tap into a trial of Android-supported technology to buy a public transport ticket, add money and even touch on and off using their phones.

Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne on Sunday announced up to 4000 Myki users could be part of the trial into the Mobile Myki technology, running until the end of March, after a successful small industry-based first phase trial.

"It's so exciting to see this cutting-edge technology take the next step - with thousands of passengers getting chance to trial Mobile Myki," she said, noting the technology uses the existing ticketing gates and readers across the public transport network.
