Bill Shorten has thanked charities around Australia supporting people in need this Christmas.

The federal opposition leader and his wife Chloe spread their Christmas cheer in front of a tree in a Foodbank warehouse in a video message to be released on Monday.

"The wonderful team here at Foodbank are making sure that families who are doing it tough don't go hungry this Christmas. And lots of charity organisations around Australia are doing the same," he said.

Mrs Shorten also thanked Australians who gave generously to ensure those less fortunate have a safe place to stay, a hot meal or presents under the tree.

The couple went on to pay tribute to those who won't get to spend Christmas with their families, including Defence Force personnel deployed away from home, and emergency services personnel keeping communities safe.

Mr Shorten paid tribute to those "for whom this is just another working day".

"Chloe and I hope that you get some time to relax this summer, to celebrate and catch up with the people you care about most," he said.
