Military software company Department 13's anti-drone software has been adapted for mobile use by defence engineering heavyweight Thales.

ASX-listed Department 13's Mesmer product can override control of drones flying dangerously close to sensitive airspaces.

Department 13 says Mesmer will be used in Thales' Bushmaster large combat vehicles on a prototype basis with a view to it being eventually deployed by military forces.

Department 13 chief executive Jonathan Hunter said the Mesmer's use on the Bushmaster is the first time it will be used in a mobile situation.

"(This) highlights the flexibility of the Mesmer software and its ability to quickly integrate into existing software and hardware platforms," he said.

The software is being showcased in Adelaide at a Land Forces event, a conference for government agencies and military officials.

Shares in Department 13 were down 1.4 per cent to 6.9 cents at 1537 AEST.
