BHP has agreed to pay $US158 million ($A215 million) in remediation and compensation to the Brazilian non-profit foundation it set up in response to the 2015 Samarco mine dam collapse.

The mining giant says the money will be offset against its provision for the disaster at the joint-venture project, which killed 19 people and called widespread environmental damage.

BHP says it will also make available as much as $US53 million, payable as required, to carry out ongoing repair works, maintain facilities and support restart planning at the site.
