A scaled-back wind farm near Yass will go ahead despite some community opposition with the NSW Independent Planning Commission approving the project as being "in the public interest".

The Bango wind farm between Yass and Boorowa in the Southern Tablelands will now have a maximum 75 turbines instead of the 120-odd the company initially wanted, the commission said in a statement on Wednesday.

The agency concluded the wind farm would "contribute renewable energy generation to meet the legislated Australian target", "contribute social and economic benefits for communities within the (area)" and was "in the public interest".
